Real shoot stories at Gyeongbokgung Palace

Gyeongbokgung Palace photoshoot guide

Gyeongbokgung offers a wide range of backdrops — the grand halls around Geunjeongjeon Hall, the pond at Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and the rear garden leading to Hyangwonjeong Pavilion. Visitors wearing hanbok have been admitted free, which is why many hanbok photoshoots happen here.

The palace closes on Tuesdays. If a Tuesday is a public holiday, it stays open that day and closes on the next non-holiday instead. Opening hours also change by season, so check the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center's notices before you lock in a date. Rules on tripods and other equipment may also change.

Right after opening is the quietest time, which makes it easier to get uncrowded shots in front of the halls. You can extend the route on foot to Seochon or Bukchon Hanok Village (officially the Seochon and Bukchon Hanok Areas).

FAQ

Do we need a ticket or permit to shoot at Gyeongbokgung?

You can shoot once you've bought an admission ticket, and visitors wearing hanbok have been admitted free. Rules on equipment for commercial shoots and other operating policies can change, so check the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center's notices and your photographer's guidance before the shoot.

Is Gyeongbokgung ever closed?

Yes. It closes every Tuesday; if a Tuesday is a public holiday, the palace stays open that day and closes on the next non-holiday instead. Opening hours also change by season, so confirm the official schedule before you book.

When is the palace least crowded?

Right after opening, there are fewer visitors, which makes it easier to get clean shots in front of the halls.

Where can we rent a hanbok?

There are several hanbok rental shops around Anguk Station and Bukchon, within walking distance of the palace. Whether hanbok rental comes with the package varies by photographer, so ask when you book.
